Creating a Vegan Plate: A Step-by-Step Guide

Discover the benefits of capitalism with The Goods, a series that showcases products to enhance your life. The market for vegan alternatives is booming, with new plant-based meat and dairy options constantly appearing in stores nationwide. Even though the hype around ambitious meat substitutes has diminished, the demand for vegan protein and dairy alternatives is growing, with a wide variety available in grocery stores. Enjoying creamy ice cream and savory meat dishes without animal cruelty is a win for both conscience and appetite. In my experimental vegan household, we’ve tried countless vegan products. Here are some of my top picks.

Tuna Substitutes The only thing I’ve missed since giving up meat has been tuna melt sandwiches. Good Catch’s tuna pouches are a close substitute, despite being on the pricier side. These often find their way into my shopping cart.

Lab-Grown Chicken I had the opportunity to try GOOD Meat’s lab-grown chicken at a restaurant in D.C. The texture is spongier than real meat, but it’s better than any other plant-based alternatives I’ve tried.

Plant-Based Cream Cheese Oatly’s cream cheese is a standout in the world of plant-based alternatives. The chive flavor is almost indistinguishable from the real thing.

Mushroom Steak I’m usually not a fan of mock meats, but Meati’s plant-based steaks made from mushrooms are an exception. They’re great with gravy or in a sandwich.

Vegan Mac and Cheese Goodles, a boxed mac-and-cheese brand endorsed by Gal Gadot, is the best vegan mac option. It’s comparable to popular non-vegan brands with no strange aftertastes.

Lab-Grown Ice Cream Perfect Indulgence ice cream made from lab-grown, animal-free dairy is unique and stands out among other vegan options.

Veggie Protein Textured vegetable protein, also known as “TVP,” is made from soy flour and has a texture similar to ground chicken. It’s perfect for adding extra protein to various dishes.

Animal-Free Milk Bored Cow’s animal-free dairy milk, created in a lab using the same technology as Perfect Indulgence, rivals most vegan milk varieties as a coffee creamer and is great for baking.

The vegan product market is thriving, offering a wide range of alternatives that cater to different tastes and preferences.
