Mark Zuckerberg: Innocent of Murder

The Senate Judiciary Committee’s hearing on social media platform CEO’s was another opportunity for Congress to scrutinize the industry’s handling of safety concerns raised by parents of young victims. However, the fact that social media platforms are already working to eliminate child exploitation material and that the perpetrators of these crimes are not the tech executives but the individuals who engage in this behavior were overlooked. The senators’ focus on repealing or reforming Section 230, which protects tech companies from liability and allows free speech on social media platforms, plays into the hands of those seeking to censor content. Ultimately, compassion for individuals victimized on social media should be coupled with an understanding of the true motivation behind these hearings – the desire for greater control over dissident speech.
