FIRE resolved a lawsuit with Port Wentworth, Georgia, over the arrest of veteran Jeff Gray for holding a sign that read “God Bless the Homeless Vets” outside city hall. The city apologized and paid $1,791 each to Gray and FIRE, and donated the same amount to the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans. They also agreed to train officers on First Amendment rights and maintain the public space outside city hall as an open forum. Gray was arrested in July 2021 for holding the sign, despite Sergeant Robert Hemminger admitting he wasn’t doing anything unlawful. Gray’s lawsuit was a collaboration between FIRE and UGA’s First Amendment Clinic, which provides students with real-world experience in representing clients on First Amendment claims.
