A study was discussed in the news, expressing the idea that social media platform TikTok filters China critical content. This led to some suggesting that TikTok should be banned. However, the study in question exhibits errors that devalue its findings. The study by the Network Contagion Research Institute (NCRI) compared the usage of certain hashtags on Instagram and TikTok. The data collected does not address the disparities in the launch dates of the platforms, and the typical ages of the users. Instagram was around years before TikTok and introduced hashtags earlier. The median age of users on Instagram is older than users on TikTok. This could cause the differences in content prevalence. These errors question the usefulness of the report, which the researchers seem to not acknowledge. Although it is not proof, the findings of the study should be taken as seriously as they have not been substantiated. The flaws in the study must be noted before accepting them for truth.
